Director of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Rochelle Walensky stated on Thursday that the US is starting to see the positive effects of the COVID-19 vaccine program.

The US is currently vaccinating at a rate of 2.5 million people per day, having one of the fastest vaccine rollouts in the world. Walensky paid special attention to those over 65, telling NBC that "mortality rates have come down dramatically, from 16 in 100,000 in January to 1 in 100,000 now."

However, she also reiterated that she worries about the "steady flow of 50,000 to 60,000 [cases per day]," and the daily death count which is still around 1,000. The US surpassed 30 million COVID-19 cases today, and its total death toll from coronavirus stands at 545,281.
