South Korean Personal Information Protection Commission fined Facebook Inc. 6.7 billion won, or $6.1 million, on Wednesday for breaching the data of at least 3.3 million out of 18 million users of the platform in that country in the period between May 2012 to June 2018.

The agency also requested a criminal investigation to be opened on how the data was used and who it was provided to.

"We have been cooperating as much as possible throughout the investigation process," a representative for Facebook's headquarter in Seoul stated. "We regret that the Personal Information Protection Commission has sought a criminal investigation."
